Alfred S- Gaillard's Confederate career was an honorable one. After some service at the Hillsboro (N. C.) Military Academy in the establishment of which his excellent brother, Wm. D. Gaillard, of the Class of 1855, was associated with Col. Tew, Alfred in July, 1861, received the appointment of 1st Lieutenant Artillery. In 1863 he was promoted Captain and rendered gallant service at Fort Sumter and in the operations about the City of Charleston. In the last regular battle of the war at Bentonville, N. C., Captain Gaillard, in the front at the last as he was in the beginning, was severely wounded and captured. He never recovered from this wound, but died from its effects in 1870.
