While living in Amherst, Virginia, Childers joined the Continental Army in March 1777. He survived the war and went on to live a long life. On 24 Apr 2008, a military tombstone was set at his grave-site by members of the Colonel Ben Caudill Camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans.
