US Congressman. Born at his family's estate "Uppowac" in King William County, Virginia, he served in the Virginia House of Delegates and as a delegate to State constitutional convention in 1788. He was elected as a Democratic-Republican to Congress, serving from 1809 to 1815, as a Jacksonian Democrat, serving from 1827 to 1831, and as a Democrat, serving from 1835 to 1837. He retired to "Uppowac", where he died in 1838. His son, John Jones Roane, was also a Congressman from Virginia.
