Irene Abbey was born on September 3, 1914. She was the last surviving live birth to Effie (Higgs) and Daniel Eaton. Irene's father was a blacksmith and farmer. They lived at the bottom of a hollow outside of New Market, VA. Irene had only a 6th grade education. Her own health and the economic times precluded more. She lived and worked outside Timberville, VA, where the father of her children's family had their home place.

She later moved the Westfield, New York area with her youngest child. She found work wherever she could and met the love of her life, Oscar Abbey.

Their "forever" was short. 3 ½ years later she was a widow.

In 1979, she was "gone to Texas" to live near her youngest child and her growing family.

Irene went home to be with "Granpap" and her God on June 9, 2010.

Irene loved cats and dogs. Her last few years were comforted by family and friends and a Chihuahua named "Brownie".

"Relay for Life" was the highlight of her year. The last 2 she did not attend for health reasons. Until the 9th, she was Baytown's oldest living cancer survivor.

Irene leaves behind her beloved son-in-law, Robert (Bob) Botto and her youngest daughter, Kathleen (Kathy), Pauline Coffman Strawderman of Stuarts Draft, VA and Patricia Coffman Dean of Florence, Arizona. Through Pauline she is a great-great-grandmother twice over.

Poor health kept Irene from traveling, but she enjoyed Kathy's daughter, Elizabeth Joy's (Kris) 4 children, all of Baytown, and loved a visit from Kathy's other daughter Catherine Knudson (Cade) of San Antonio, Tx.

Her beloved Oscar's family resides in and around Westfield, New York, and in Wyoming. One sister-in-law on her side resides in Virginia.

Irene will be interred in Quincey Cemetery at Ripley, New York beside Oscar.

A memorial Service in Baytown will be celebrated in the Fireside Room at Trinity Tabernacle Assembly of God, on July 5, 2010 from 12:00 Noon to 2:00 p.m. Irene will be celebrated in New York on her interment at a later date.

Arrangements are under the direction and personal care of Navarre Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 2444 Rollingbrook Dr., Baytown, TX, 77521 (281) 422-8111.
