OBITUARY
THE CHARITON DEMOCRAT
Chariton, Iowa
Wednesday, July 23, 1884
DIED - Mr. S. S. Martin, an old and well known resident of this city died on last Tuesday night. A week previous to his death he was at work in Mr. Mallory's orchard and was overcome with the heat.
He was taken home, and soon apparently recovered from the effects, so much so that he was about as usual until the following Saturday, when he was again attacked, this time the trouble being a congestive chill.
He rapidly grew worse and by Sunday evening it became apparent that he could not long survive, having lapsed into a semi-comatose condition which continued until death relieved him.
Mr. Martin was in his sixty-sixth year, and was a native of Kentucky. He had been a resident of Chariton for the past fifteen years. He was buried from his late residence on last Thursday, and a large concourse of friends followed the remains to the cemetery.
