Civil War Veteran

Benjamin Franklin "Ben" Lane was born about 1838 in Rockingham Co. VA, the 5th of 7 children of Lewis and Lucinda (Clatterbuck) Lane. He lived in Rockingham Co. until the late 1840s when the family moved a few miles south to Highland Co. VA. In 1859 the family moved to Pleasant Hill, IL (Lexington Township, McLean Co.,about 10 miles northeast of Bloomington) where his father had a land grant from the Federal Govt. for his service in the Virginia Militia during the War of 1812.

On 8/20/1862 Ben enlisted in the Union Army (Company C, Illinois 94th Infantry) along with his brother Lewis Harvey and brother-in-law Charles Little. His enlistment papers describe him as a farmer, age 23, single, 5'10" tall with red hair, black eyes, and a fair complexion. He served as a Private, and his unit was engaged in a number of battles with Confederates in southern Missouri and northern Arkansas during 1862 and 1863. He was discharged 12/3/1963 with a disability ("lung fever" - probably tuberculosis) and received a disability pension the rest of his life.

In 1864 or 1865 Benjamin and his younger brother Jacob moved from Pleasant Hill, IL to the Lafayette, IN area and the rest of the family followed shortly after. In 1867 he married Alcinda V. Caldwell in Tippecanoe Co. In 1880 they were living in Brookston, IN with their 2 children: Ada May Lane (born 1868) and Carrie V. Lane (born 1873). Ben worked as a "farm worker" and also drew a pension as a disabled veteran.

It appears that Alcinda died or possibly she and Ben divorced in the early 1880s. About 1884 Ben married Hereca L. "Reekie" Schwartz and they had 4 children:
Edward W. (1885–1940)
Viola May (1888–1939)
Bernice F. (1891–1916)
Frank Benjamin (1894–1977)

About 1889 Ben and his family moved to Hoopeston with his brother and sister-in-law, Algernon and Elizabeth Lane, and lived there until Ben died 7/7/1898 at age 60. His obituary in the Hoopeston Chronicle, Thursday, July 14, 1898 reads:

"Death of Benjamin F. Lane. Ben F. Lane, an old soldier, died at his home in this city at 11:30 Thursday of stomach trouble, complicated with paralysis. The funeral services were held in the M. E. church, of which deceased was a member, at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon, Rev. Parker Shields officiating, after which the body was laid to rest at Floral Hill."

Reekie remarried in 1901 (Isaac Davis) and had 5 more children. She died 2/2/1928 and was buried in Logansport, IN.
