At 7:30 pm on New Year's Eve, 1931, Edward C Helke was married and immediately took his bride Ruth D Merkle to a farm at 1909 Jackson Road (Butler Twp, Montgomery Co, OH).
Today, Helke is one of the biggest farmers and biggest Democrats in the county. He weighs 275 pounds and farms more than 400 acres.
At 60, his black, full head of hair is barely turning grey around the temples. He does not wear glasses and he seldom has to see a doctor.
He (and his wife) still resides on the 84 acre farm he (they) purchased the summer before his (their) marriage but (he)rents additional acreage for his corn, wheat, hay, soybean, beef, pig, and sheep production. His father and grandfather before him, farmed in the same area.
