Pearl DeVere was Cripple Creek's most famous madam. Proprietress of the Old Homestead, Pearl ran her brothel with the utmost class and decorum. References and credit checks were prerequisites to patronize the Old Homestead, where only the best in poker, liquor, cigars, meals and entertainment were served. Pearl died of a morphine overdose after one her famous Saturday night soirees. Her funeral procession made it's way right up Bennett Avenue, the city's main street. Pearl was so respected that she was the only known prostitute to merit burial allowed inside Mt. Pisgah Cemetery (Bio by J. MacKell).
