Milton Emmette Phillips died May 29, 2005 in the Payson Care Center following a short illness. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Effie July 28, 2004 and two of her sons, Steven and Lee.

Mr. Phillips was born in Tyler, Texas. After completing elementary and high school he attended Bible College for two years.

While living and working in Oklahoma City, he met Effie Triplett. They were married January 1946 in Witcha Falls, Texas. They moved to Tucumcari, New Mexico and purchased a service station. This was the beginning of Milton's life-long career in the oil business. He acquired other service stations and in 1951 built one of the first truck stops in the United States.

In 1956 he relocated the truck stop onto highway 66 in Tucumcari. His partner Edward Shipley stayed in Tucumcari and in 1961 Mr. Phillips moved his family to Holbrook and opened a truck stop on Navajo Blvd, which was Route 66. They later built the big Truck Terminal east of Holbrook on Interstate 40. In 1965 they opened a truck stop in Kingman. Milton also built several gas stations in Northern Arizona and in Phoenix. He remained active in running the business as President and CEO until the last few months when his health began to fail.

Mr. Phillips was active in and a great support to the First Assembly of God for all the years he lived here. They moved to Phoenix in 1989 and there attended Bell Garden Assembly of God.

Milton is survived by his three sons, Dale (Linda) Phillips of Holbrook, John (Rita) Phillips of Show Low, Mark Phillips of Phoenix; one daughter, Clare (John) Knauer of Santa Ana, California; 11 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and one great grandchild.

Funeral services for Milton Emmette Phillips will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 6 at the First Assembly of God Church on Mission Lane in Holbrook. There will be a visitation Sunday evening June 5 from 6-8 p.m. at Owens Mortuary in Holbrook; Interment will be in the Holbrook Cemetery.
