Thomas Kaufman was an architect who worked in Richmond, Indiana with his father, William S. Kaufman. He married May Aufderheide, the noted ragtime composer just as her career was taking off. He left the practice of architecture and joined his father-in-law's business in Indianapolis. Before retirement he was executive vice president of Commonwealth Loan Company and a former president of National Consumer's Finance Association. The couple retired in about 1945 to a bungalow which he designed on the grounds of the Huntington Sheraton Hotel in Pasadena, California. The bungalow, known as the Rose Villa, is now demolished. He was a member of the Murat Shrine, Indianapolis.
