Murl served in the US Army, Third Armored Division (Spearhead) during the end WWII, and during the occupation of Germany.
He lived in Hildebran with his wife Betty Jo Bridges Smart. He was co-owner of S & S Auto Parts with his nephew Johnnie, and later worked with Unifor Properties until his death at the VA Hospital in Oteen, NC
Murl was proceeded in death by his Father Lee H. Smart, Mother Nellie Mae Lail Smart, and an infant son Jerry Ray Smart.
