Quote from "An Outline of Cruces"
"William Zack went off to the Civil War from Georgia and he didn't come home and didn't come home and the family was terribly worried about him. One day his dog just got up off the ground and ran off down the road and in a little while they saw the dog coming back and somebody was with him. Tom Cruce said, "It was my granddad and don't you know that was some thrill.""

HISTORICAL NOTES:
Burtwell's-Girardey's-Pritchard's Battery was organized at Athens, Georgia, in April, 1861, with men from Clarke County. It participated in the fight at Shiloh , then was assigned to J.K. Jackson's Brigade and fought with the Army of Tennessee from Murfreesboro to Missionary Ridge. The company was later converted to heavy artillery and attached to the 22nd Georgia Artillery Battalion.

If you are referencing Civil War Records for William Zack Cruce, do not confuse him with William Cruce of the GA 43rd Infantry Regiment. They are not the same person.

He was killed by a tree he was cutting when it fell on him.
