Word has been received here of the death on October 22 of John Luke Osteen, 88, a native of Transylvania County, a former state senator and for 30 years chief probation officer of the U.S. Middle District of N.C. Court, at his home in Greensboro.
Mr. Osteen, former principal of Lake Toxaway School left Transylvania County in 1924 to become Deputy Prohibition Administrator for Western N.C. in Salisbury. In 1928 he moved to Greensboro where he served for 30 years as Chief Probation Officer of the U.S. Middle District Court until his retirement in 1962.
Arter his retirement, Osteen served a three-year stint as probation officer for Guilford County Juvenile Court, resigning that post in 1965 to run successfully for the state senate. From 1966 to 1968 he was Guilford County's only Republican senator and was minority leader of the Senate During his term.
He served as District Chairman of the Republican Party form 1969 to 1970.
Mr. Osteen, who married the former Ruth Tatum of Salisbury, was the father of Attorney William Osteen of Greensboro and Major General John L. Osteen, Jr of Brevard. Also surviving are six grandchildren and four sisters who reside in Brevard, Belle Rogers, Rita Bryson, Mae Smith and Emma Lance.
