ROSS BARRETT, MEDIA EXECUTIVE

Ross Barrett was born in Washington, D.C. on April 21, 1911 and passed away on May 11, 2010 at his home. He came to Los Angeles in 1946 after serving in World War II as a Lieutenant Commander in the office of Secretary of the Navy James Forestal.

Always associated with marketing and advertising management, Mr. Barrett spent the last 25 years of his business career as an executive of Metromedia, Inc., an NYSW media and entertainment company that owned and operated 21 television and radio stations, including KTTV Channel 11, Los Angeles (later, with other Metromedia TV stations, becoming part of the Fox network), Foster & Kleiser Outdoor Advertising, the Ice Capades and the Harlem Globe Trotters. As president of Foster & Kleiser, Mr. Barrett developed that operation into the country's largest outdoor advertising company. In 1970 he became a senior corporate executive of Metromedia but continued to serve as chairman of Foster & Kleiser Corp., the general partner of Foster & Kleiser, L.P. Upon his retirement from Metromedia in 1985 he was retained for two years as Consultant to the Chairman, John W. Kluge.

Active in civic and charitable organizations, Mr. Barrett was at different times a director of both the Los Angeles and the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce. He was an emeritus member of the board of Claremont Graduate University. Before joining that board he was a visiting lecturer at what later became the University's Peter F. Drucker Graduate School of Management. He was also on the Advisory Board of the University's School of Educational Studies. For nearly a quarter of a century Mr. Barrett was the west coast chairman of Boys and Girls Clubs of America. He was a member of that organization's national executive committee. He was a graduate director of the Advertising Council, a member of the board of the Salvation Army (Los Angeles), and the Marycrest nursing home. He served on several state and national government commissions including the Presidential Commission Against Drunk Driving.

Mr. Barrett's wife of 57 years, Rita Long Barrett, former president of the Costume Council of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, died in 1994. He is survived by his daughter Lynne Reynolds of Menlo Park, his son Buckley Barrett of Lake Arrowhead, three grandchildren and twin great-grandchildren. His family and a wide circle of friends will miss him dearly.

Donations in Ross's memory may be directed to the attention of David Carpenter, Claremont Graduate University, Office of Advancement, 165 E. 10th Street, Claremont, CA 91711 or to Marycrest Manor, 10664 St. James Drive, Culver City, CA 90230.
