Canton–William Howard Wilson, age 76, died Sunday, December 16, 2007, at Memorial Mission Hospital.

He was a native of Haywood County and the son of the late Edwon and Annie Bertwhistle Dethridge Wilson. He was preceded in death by his wife of over 50 years, Patricia Joan Clark Wilson, who died in March, 2005; four sisters; and three brothers. He graduated from Blanton's Business College. He retired from Champion International with 36 years of service where he was a shift supervisor for 18 years and he served on the mill council before the union was organized. He was a lifelong member of the Methodist church. William coached little league baseball and won one championship title and served as vice-president along with Bully Milner. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 5198 and a member of the Moose Lodge for 16 years. He was one of the first boy scouts when Troop 316 was formed at First United Methodist Church in the 1940's. He was a United States Army veteran serving in Korea from 1952 – 1954 where he drove a fuel truck and fought on the frontlines.

He is survived by two daughters, Pamela Wilson Lance and her husband, Sherrill, of Canton, Patti Wilson Henline and her husband, Jeff, of Clyde; three sons, Richard "Rick" Allen Wilson and his wife, Sheri, of Canton, William "Billy" Carlton Wilson of Canton, and Reverend Daniel Howard Wilson and his wife, Vickie, of Albemarle, a sister, Evelyn Laird and her husband, John, of Trenton, NJ; a brother, Clifford Wilson and his wife, Gladys, of Candler; eleven grandchildren, Jeremy, Josh, and Garrett Wilson, Tasha Smith, Adam and Tonya Simonds, Mandy Wilson, Alecia Lance Rollins, Ryan Lance, Daniel R. Wilson, and Shaleigh Wilson; and ten great-grandchildren, Alyssa and Michael Wilson, Jaxkson and MacKenzie Wilson, Silence, Cadence, and Charlotte Rollins, Allyson and Branson Jones and Hollie Dyer.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 20, 2007, at Piney Grove United Methodist Church with the Reverend Daniel Howard Wilson, Youth Pastor Daniel R. Wilson, and Reverend Tim C. Drum officiating. Burial will follow at Bon-A-Venture Cemetery, Old Clyde Road with full military graveside rites. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at Wells Funeral Home of Canton. At other times, the family will be at his residence. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
