US Army General. He attended the University of Missouri, but left after passing the examination for a commission. He initially served in the Philippines with the 5th Field Artillery. During World War I he was an instructor at reserve officers training camps, and then commanded the 83rd Field Artillery Battalion. After the war he was an ROTC instructor at the University of Missouri. He graduated from the Command and General Staff College (1924), and Army War College (1930). Jones served on the Field Artillery School faculty from 1935 to 1938, and was a Professor with the University of Missouri’s ROTC from 1939 to 1940. From 1940 to 1941 he was I Corps Chief of Staff. In April 1941, he was promoted to Brigadier General as commander of the 76th Field Artillery Brigade. In 1942 and 1943 he commanded the defense of Amchitka as the US military defeated the Japanese occupation of the Aleutian Islands. From July 1943 to December 1944, Jones commanded the 10th Mountain Division during its organization and training in Colorado. From December 1944 until his April 1946 retirement he served at the Army War College and Headquarters, Army Ground Forces. His awards included the Distinguished Service Medal.
