COOLIDGE - Visitation for Melvin "Mel" Helmick, 77 of Coolidge will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Simes Mortuaries Coolidge Chapel. The funeral there will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, with Evangelist Neil Woodbury officiating. Burial will be in Valley Memorial Park.

Mr. Helmick was born Nov. 9, 1919 in Tracy, Iowa, and died Feb. 15, 1997 in Florence. An Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, he was a member of Odd Fellows and was one of the first police reserve officers in Coolidge. He retired as Coolidge public works director and also retired as a fire captain with the city department. He was a member of the Coolidge Active Care emergency amateur radio team in the area and also First Christian Church.

He is survived by his wife, Marvel; two daughters, Vickie Pratt and Mel Linda Helmick; a son, Kelvin; 4 sisters, Neva Mathews, Dorothy Layton, Lucille Moody, and Ester Daniels; a brother, Ralph; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, a sister and a brother.
