Mrs. Mary Ann Wilcutt, one of the very oldest among the Knoxville pioneers, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. C.W. Pope, in this city, Sunday, January 11, 1920 at about 12 o'clock noon, aged 82 years, 7 months and 10 days. Death resulted from erysipelas, after a sickness of about two weeks.
Mary Ann Gregory was born in Owen county, Indiana, June 2, 1837. She came to Iowa in her girlhood days with her parents Rev. W.T. and Anne Gregory, who settled in this county at what was then the flourishing village of Gosport.
She was united in marriage with Charles D. Wilcutt, March 21, 1858. To this union four children were born, viz: Elijah Wilcutt; Arminta, widow of the late C.W. Pope; Anna Isabel, wife of M.C. (Calvin) Wilson, all of Knoxville, and William T. of Joplin, Missouri. Her husband departed this life in 1884. ?(his gravestone says 1894)
She was converted and united with the church in 1864, and lived a consistent Christian life for more than a half century.
After the death of her husband she spent her time in helping others, and made her home among her children. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She certainly was one well worthy of the heavenly prize she has gained.
Besides the four children mentioned, many others are left to mourn her death, including twenty-five grand-children, and forty great-grandchildren. No sister, no brother - she was the last of her immediate family.
At the time of her death she was a member of the Free Methodist church.
Funeral services were held at the home of her daughter Mrs. Calvin Wilson, 714 East Main Street, Knoxville. Tuesday, January 13, at 1 o'clock p.m. conducted by Rev. R.S. Tague of Bussey. Burial in Columbia cemetery, beside the remains of her husband.
