Mary was born in Illnois to Amos Maynard (Pennsylvania) and mother Sarah (Vermont). She was married Dec 31, 1870, to William Veloris Churchill in Red Wing, Goodhue Co., Minnesota. They had 4 children, Richard, Frances Julia, William Jr., and Herbert, who was born after his father's death. Her husband William Churchill was shot and killed in 1875 in their living room in front of his three young Children. See William's memorial for the story of his death.

She married next William Henry Butler in 1882. Mary and William Butler had three children, Harriet, George, and Elizabeth. Around 1890, William Butler and his step-daughter, Frances Churchill, eloped and were married.

Mary Maynard had two sisters, Catherine and Sarah along with two brothers,Stanley and Lawrence. Mary died of Brights Disease (Kidney Disease).

The spelling of her maiden name is found several ways through different documents and census records. The 1850 census where she is found with her family is spelled Maynard. Other common spellings are Minard and Menard.
