Shakespeare once said "The world is but a stage and the people merely players:" Gail played more than her share – wife, stepmother, teacher, advocate for societies marginalized.
During her time on earth, she taught students of many levels, from those who were mentally challenged to college students. While teaching at MARCA, she was not afraid to do what had to be done to not only teach the student but society as well. One of her proudest accomplishments was to see her former students gainfully employed; in years not too far in past, many were kept at home or shut away in institutions.
Gail was well-known in Marion, and beyond, for her many roles in Marion's theatre community; Whether it was directing or begging (or borrowing) props to be used in the many productions she and her husband, Ray, were involved in.
Gail and Ray were married in 1966 and moved to Marion the same year. In the summer of 1968, Ray's children from a former marriage joined them; from that day on, she referred to the children as "our children."
A pillar of the Emanuel Lutheran Church, Gail was deeply involved in the Emanuel Choir and Parish Planning Council. For years, she served as a Sunday School Teacher and helped to organize the "Thanks and Giving" Community Meal.
A woman of commitment and passion, Gail gave of herself to the P.E.O. Sisterhood, of which she was a member of Chapter DT and was a past state president. She was a member of the Ohio Community Theater Association, Professional Association for Retardation in Ohio, Love in the Name of Christ, a past president of the Northland Homes Board (to help find housing for those with disabilities), and she was a volunteer for Marion General Hospital Hospice.
Having a thirst for knowledge, Gail read and absorbed book after book and she had a unique ability to fully understand most any subject. She used this ability to be an amazing "advocate for a cause," and she would take on any cause she believed in full steam ahead. Also, she was a "staunch American conservative."
In theatre, Gail "came alive" and she lived to direct and work with her beloved children performers.
Gail was filled with "light, love and laughter," and she was "so loved" for the beauty within her heart and for her charming charisma and grace.
She will be dearly missed by her husband, Raymon ; three step-children; two niece; sister-in-law; cousins in Ohio and California; and many of the dearest friends anyone could ever have.
Gail was preceded in death by her parents: Wells N. Raymond, Sr. and Ruth (Crockett) Raymond; and a brother, Wells N. Raymond, Jr.
Gail's family will greet friends from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, May 13, 2010, at the Emanuel Lutheran Church, 241 S. Prospect St., Marion. A memorial service filled with Gail's "light, love and laughter" will also be held there on Friday at 5:00 p.m., with Pastor Mark Schuring officiating. Gail would want her friends to come and make light of the situation, and share a story from the heart. Friends are again welcome to visit for an hour prior to her services. Inurnment will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Emanuel Lutheran Church, c/o Music Program, 241 S. Prospect St., Marion, Ohio 43302, and to the American Cancer Society, 870 Michigan Ave., Columbus, Ohio 43215.
