John and his older brother Philipp married sisters Catherine and Mary Trimbor in Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin. They had planned to move to Oregon, when Philipp suddenly died from the effects of serving in the Civil War.

The two families decided to make the move anyway and John became the guardian of Philipp's family of 6 children. John and Catherine had no children of their own.

John established the Ditter store in Sublimity, which he owned and operated until he turned it over to his nephew John "Jack" Ditter.
