Unknown. He married Clarissa Richardson about 1865. She was born about December 1840 and died 1909 in Starr, Anderson County South Carolina, the daughter of Willis A. Richardson and Drucilla Edney Gaines

Robert was captured in Wilderness, Virginia at the beginning of the war and was a prisoner of War until it was over. The story was told, that when Robert was captured, either one or two of his brother's were with him, saw Robert being taken away and they ran away and went back to Georgia. Robert enlisted March 11, 1863 in Hartwell, Hart County, Georgia. Company Muster Roll list Robert Fain absent and prisoner of War. The 16th Georgia Infantry came from Madison, Jackson, Geuinnett, Hart, and Habersham Georgia Counties.

After the Civil War Robert acquired land and in Starr, Anderson County, South Carolina (actually it was between the towns of Starr and Iva), located just past the Old Good Hope Presbyterian Church. There was a bridge below the Cemetery, which still exists, people in that area called "Fin's Bridge" but it was actually Fain's Bridge.
