Succumbs From Heart Attack At Age 81; Resident Here 21 Years

Walter J. Nickerson, prominent local businessman and owner of the coal yard on West Main Street, which bears his name, died at 3 o’clock this morning at his home in 93 Neparan Road, Tarrytown, after a sudden illness. He was eighty-one years old.
Death came an hour and a half after he complained of a heart attack. Although Mr. Nickerson underwent a serious operation several months ago. He appeared to have fully recovered his health and was carrying on his business activities as before.
The deceased was born at Kingston, N.Y., a son of the late George and Amelia Nickerson. He received his education in the public schools at Kingston.
Mr. Nickerson established a large lumber business at Ridgewood, N.J., and operated it until 21 years ago when he purchased the Odell coal yard on West Main Street here.
Mr. Nickerson was not a fraternal man but was interested in the progress of the Young Men’s Christian Association and the Tarrytown Hospital Association, being a member of each. During his years here he made a host of friends. As an employer he was held in the highest esteem by his employees of whom he was ever considerate.
Besides his widow, Nena Rodie Nickerson, one son, W. Alexander Nickerson, who resides in California; one brother, Edward Nickerson of Poughkeepsie, and a sister, Mrs. Edward Raque of West Englewood, N.J., survive. There is also one grandchild, Nancy Nickerson of California.
The body is reposing at the Bennett Mortuary on Broadway, where the funeral services will be held at noon Thursday. The Rev. Robert T. Taylor, minister of the First Reformed Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Montrepose Cemetery in Kingston.

On the day of the funeral, 10 October, the same obituary appeared in the Kingston Freeman with the additional information about the graveside service. The Rev. James N. Armstrong Jr. of the Rondout Presbyterian Church had charge of the services at the grave.
