He lost his life in an automobile accident at the young age of 20 years, when a car in which he was a passenger crashed near Pickensville, south of Easley, SC. He died at Greenville General Hospital in Greenville, SC.
At the time of his death he was survived by his parents, brothers Heyward and Wade Gilstrap; sisters, Willie, Lillie Mae, Louise, and Ruth Gilstrap.
His funeral service was conducted at Golden Creek Baptist Church on Tuesday, May 25, 1948, conducted by the Revs. H.M. Chambers, Coman Brown, John Tollison, and F.S. Childress.
Interment: West View Cemetery, Liberty.
