Melrose - Funeral services were held at the Baptist Church in Melrose Wednesdy afternoon, December the 10th, at three o’clock for Mr. Ben Baxton Wheeler (1881-1947), Rev. Capell officiating. Mrs. Wheeler was killed in an automobile ccident near here about two years ago. At that time they had been reidents of Melrose for a number of years. Since then Mr. Wheeler has lived elsewhere. Melrose - Ben Baxton Wheeler Sr. (1882-1947), age 65, former local resident, died suddenly Saturday afternoon in Gainesville.
He was a native of Columbia County, and had spent his entire lifetime in Florida, except for a short residence in California. For years he was well known as a road contractor. He resided in Melrose for about sixteen years, and then went to Gainesville to make his home with his daughter, Miss Ruth Wheeler of Los Angeles; three sons, D. B., Jr., James and William Wheeler, of Los Angeles; and two brothers, S. Wheeler of Eton Park, and E. E. Wheeler of Jacksonville. (Palatka Times-Herald Obituary dtd Friday, 12 Dec 1947.)
