FUNERAL OF MR ABBOTT

YMCA Secretary Will Be Buried In Oakwood Today

Spartanburg, Jan 11 [1911] -- The funeral of Walter B Abbott, secrectary of the Spartanburg YMCA, who met a tragic death yesterday by the discharge of a revolver in his own hands, will take place tomorrow afternoon at the First Baptist Church, the burial following in Oakwood cemetery.

The services at the church will be conducted by its pastor, Rev L M Roper. He will be assisted by Rev W H K Pendleton of the Episcopal church Rev R S Truesdale of the Methodist Church and Dr J S Watkins of the Presbyterian church. The members of the YMCA, the Boys Gospel League and other religious organizations will attend in a body.

YMCA officials from New York, Nashville, Atlanta, Greenville, Charlotte and Asheville will attend.

Hundreds of messages of sympathy poured into his family today from YMCA workers everywhere.

The following is excerpted from Jan 11, 1911, The State
Walter Abbott remained unmarried until he was more than 50 years of age. It is a singular coincidence that Mr Abbott's father and grandfather were not married until after they were each 50 years of age. A few years ago, Mr Abbott was one of the happiest men in the world. At that time Mr Stratton, the general secretary at Fall River, Massachusetts, received a letter from Mr Abbott that his home had been blessed by the appearance of a son, the only heir of the entire Abbott family to bear the family name. Then after about 18 months the little one fell ill, and last July Mr Stratton received a mourning card announcing that the great blow had fallen.

At the request of The State, Mr Stratton noted the following facts about the life of Mr Abbott: Was born in New Hampshire; first field as YMCA secretary was Concord, NH, afterwards, Salem, Mass, Worcester, Mass, Nashville, Tenn, Galveston, Texas, New Orleans, La; and then to Spartanburg; married in New Orleans.
