Wife of Asbury Collins Curtis. Mother of Mary Joyce, Edith Amanda McKinley, Ruth Mae Hodges, Cyrus Dean and Thomas Gay. She was the daughter of Thomas Gay and Lotilla Ann Woods. Emma died at the age of 38 years, 6 months, 15 days.

"Mrs. A.C. Curtis - Emma Gay was born in Lucas county, Iowa on Feb. 15, 1873, and died in Cheyenne, Wyo. Aug. 30, 1911. The immediate cause of death was an abcess resulting from appendicitis. Her health had been good until about the first of the month, and then her symptoms were not such as to cause alarm. But about a week before her demise the symptoms became more serious and seemed to call for an operation. Arrangements were made accordingly and the journey of 13 miles to Cheyenne was made with no indications of special fatigue. However, alarming symptoms appeared very soon after the hospital was reached. All that humuan skill could suggest was done to no avail. She passed away in a few hours without undergoing the proposed operation. It is about 30 years since the deceased unitied with the May Baptist church. Two years later she moved her membership to the First Baptist church of Chariton where she continued a member until the removal of the family to Wyoming a year ago last July. The same faithfulness to her Master which characterized her life in this community has shown itself in the new place of residence. She has had a large share in the organization and maintainance of the only religious work in the community where they have been living. Her marriage to Mr. A. C. Curtis occurred on Sept. 6, 1891. She was the mother of five children, three of whom, Edith, Ruth and Dean are living. Besides her children and her husband she is survivied by her mother, Mrs. Thos. Gay, three sisters, Mrs. Carrie Young, of Selah, Wash., Mrs. Frank Curtis and Miss Margaret Gay of this city, and three brothers, Alva Gay, of Ashland, Nebr., Eugene, of Griswold, Iowa and Will D. of Essex, Iowa. Words cannot express the sorrow of this community over this sad providence or the sympathy that is felt for the stricken relatives. Few deaths in this community have made a more profound impression."
