James Ballantyne was educated in Edinburgh and was the only member of his immediate family to immigrate to the United States. He came to Texas in the winter of 1850 landing in Galveston, Texas. By 1852, his family was living in Hill County, in 1859 they were living in Young County, in 1861 they were living in Bexar County, and by 1869, they had settled in Kinney County, Texas.
