Wood was the oldest of nine children born to Francis Marion Underhill and Eleanora Jane Cummins.
Born in Boone County, Kentucky, by 1900 Wood, his parents and five of his siblings (Lydia, Frank (later called Dolph), Sallie, Nancy, and Mary) are living in Liberty, Missouri. His youngest sister, Mary, was born in Barlow, Kentucky in 1897, so the move to Missouri was probably between 1898-1900.

In 1910, Wood is living with his widowed mother, and sisters Lydia, Nancy, and Mary in Barlow, Ballard County, Kentucky. Ballard County is just across the Ohio River from Alexander County, Illinois where he and Sallie married and lived.
