Wood married Sarah Jane "Sallie" Everett on August 13, 1911 in Alexander County, Illinois (probably in Cairo, where all 7 of their children were born).

Wood was the oldest of nine children born to Francis Marion Underhill and Eleanora Jane Cummins.

Born in Boone County, Kentucky, by 1900 Wood, his parents and five of his siblings (Lydia, Frank (later called Dolph), Sallie, Nancy, and Mary) are living in Liberty, Missouri. His youngest sister, Mary, was born in Barlow, Kentucky in 1897, so the move to Missouri was probably between 1898-1900.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army in Jefferson Banks, Missouri on January 11, 1907 at 26 years of age.

In 1910, Wood is living with his widowed mother, and sisters Lydia, Nancy, and Mary in Barlow, Ballard County, Kentucky. Ballard County is just across the Ohio River from Alexander County, Illinois where he and Sallie married and lived.
