Sallie's mother, Annie Lee Rust, died giving birth to her. She was the only child born to Annie and Christopher C. Everett. Christopher had 9 or 10 children with his first wife, Mary Ann Evelyn.
Sallie lived with her grandmother Rust (Nancy Jane Houser Rust Summers) in Cairo, Illinois until her grandmother passed in 1905. She spent some time in a "children's home" (orphanage) then lived with her Uncle James H. "Jim" Rust and his family by 1910.
