Rex Lee Vanderpool, 83, of Jasper died Tuesday, June 24, 2003 at his home. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 28 at Coffman Funeral Home in Jasper with Robert Harris and Troy Walker officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 27 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Jasper Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jerry Vanderpool, Jason Ricketts, James Spears, Phillip Vanderpool, Junior Raulston and James Compton. The son of the late James Benjamin and Martha Viola Carter Vanderpool was born March 6, 1920 in Norman, Okla. He married Dorothy Harris on March 19, 1948 in Newton County and had worked for the county judge and county sheriff in Newton County many years ago. He also worked in law enforcement as a private deputy in Johnson County, Kan. where he and his wife had lived for 39 years. They returned to Newton County in 1994. Mr. Vanderpool was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U. S. Army. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Jimmy and Jerry Vanderpool; two brothers, James and Earl Vanderpool; and a sister, Virchie Vanderpool. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Dorothy Vanderpool of the home; his children, Johnny Vanderpool of Jasper and Connie Olinger of Wesley; one brother, Emmet Vanderpool of Camden; 11 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
