Alexander Brown came to Southeast Grove in 1837. He secured his land from the Government, improved it , and became an influential citizen of the county prior to his death in 1849. He was killed in a runaway accident at the age of 45, and left his widow with the care of five children, one of whom was born after his death. At the time of his death, his oldest daughter was 12, and John Brown, the second born, was 9. After Alexander's death, the grove community found it needful to set apart a place for the burial of the dead. They forned a cemetery society, and on April 1, 1850, they chose John Brown Jr. as chairman and Hiram Kingsbury as secretary.
John Brown Jr was Alexander Brown's brother, and one of six sons of John Brown of Scotland.
