Father Terence Joseph Stanton, O.S.B. died peacefully in the Lord on Friday, October 27, 2000 in the Infirmary of Marmion Abbey, Aurora, Illinois. He was 83 years old.
    Father Terence was born on October 28, 1917 in Aurora, Illinois. He attended Fox Valley Catholic High School, the predecessor school of Marmion Academy, for one year before transferring to St. Meinrad Minor Seminary, St. Meinrad, Indiana. On August 6, 1938 Father Terence professed vows as a Benedictine monk of St. Meinrad Abbey. He was ordained a priest on June 5, 1943 and began the following year teaching in St. Meinrad Minor Seminary.
    In 1947 Father Terence returned to Aurora, Illinois as a founding member of Marmion Abbey which was raised to the status of an abbey on March 21, 1947. From 1947 to 1953 he taught history and Latin at Marmion Military Academy and was also Student Chaplain. He was very popular among the students, noted for the wisdom of his advice and warm rapport. He was an outstanding preacher during his priestly ministry.
    From 1953-1958 Father Terence traveled the country giving spiritual retreats to a variety of groups and ages-clergy, religious, military personnel and youth. He was particularly sought after as a giver of high school retreats. He returned to Marmion Military Academy in 1958 as the Student Chaplain and teacher of theology and Latin.
    From 1972 until his retirement in 1991 Father was pastor of parishes in Elkton and Tyndall, South Dakota in the Sioux Falls Diocese of South Dakota. In 1991, he returned to Marmion Abbey to live the monastic life assuming the position of Director of Oblates and serving parishes in the Fox Valley area.
    Besides his monastic family of Marmion Abbey, Father Terence is survived by a number of cousins, nephews, and nieces.
    Father's body will be received by the monastic community of Marmion Abbey on Sunday, October 29, 2000 at 4:30 p.m. in the Abbey Church of St. Augustine of Canterbury. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m., with the Office of the Dead prayed at 6:30 p.m. Visitation will continue on Monday morning October 30, 2000 from 8:00 a.m. until the Funeral Mass at 3:15 p.m. which will be celebrated. Burial will take place immediately after the mass in the Abbey Cemetery.
