Uncle Walt was born on the family homestead near Niles, Michigan on October 30, 1870 (Film #2297925; Digital Folder #4016174; Image #836; Reference No. item 3, p 185, m 580). He was in the Navy during the Spanish American War. He was a fairly short man (around 5'4"), but was a boxing champ on the ship. After the war, the government gave out parcels of land in South Dakota, so he moved out there from Niles and began farming (corn) alternating two teams of three horses each. He was almost 60 years old in 1929 when he married his wife, Hazel V Smith, and about 30 years older than her! They had 2 children, a daughter and a son (Norma Jean and Evan James). Walt would bring Norma Jean back to the Niles area for summer vacations and to visit family. Walter F Preble lived in Lucas, South Dakota (a small town near Burke), so he and his family probably died there.
