Book: Cemeteries of Pontotoc County, Mississippi
Author: Peggy A. Young, Pontotoc County Historical Society (Miss.)
Publisher: Express Printing, 1999
It says "Abernethy, William 1776 1846", Abernethy Cemetery
it is unclear if the above book used actual headstone transcriptions, or if it originates from genealogy research.
William's census in 1830 & 1840 indicates he was actually born sometime between 1781 and 1790.
Possible birthplace is Tyron County (now Lincoln Co.), North Carolina.
The children of William are inconsistent on William's birthplace, but NC is the most prevalent.
The earliest census in North Carolina for ANY Abernathy is 1790 Lincoln Co. NC.
Census records indicate that William died sometime between the 1840 & 1850 census. William's last census was in 1840 Jefferson County, Alabama. It appears that all of his children were in Pontotoc County, Mississippi by the 1850 census.
I have NOT been able to find any documentation to prove William's parents. The most logical choice for father, would have an 1810 census in Lincoln Co., NC. There are many Abernathy households in 1810 Lincoln County that have males old enough to be father of William.
