James was the eldest son of Benjamin and Sallie Ellers. My grandmother called him "Marty". He suffered a head injury in a fall, sometime between 1910 and 1920 and was placed in Springfield Hospital Center (per 1920 census). By 1930 he was in Spring Grove Hospital Center in Catonsville. His baby sister moved to the Catonsville area in 1928 and he used to attempt to get to her and would escape the grounds. In 1954 he escaped but they never found him. His remains were found the following spring in a nearby farmers field.

He had been married to a woman named Minnie Kraft in 1904 and had five children. Two (James P. Ellers and Genevieve Ellers) were placed in local orphanages. A third child, Mary was placed with her aunt, Minnie Stickell. The fourth child, Joseph, was in St. Vincent's Asylum and by 1935 had moved to NYC where he worked at the Diplomat Hotel until joining the US Army in 1942. The fifth child, Eleanor, also at St. Vincent's with her brother Joseph, moved to New York as well and was also institutionalized for schizophrenia not long after the birth of her daughter Mary in 1933. She was lobotomized and died in 1986 The whereabouts of the wife are unknown.

In 1911 he took and passed the examination which would have allowed him to proceed as a probationer and become a Baltimore City Police Officer. He was never listed as a member of the force.

Court Proceedings - Judge Soper
February 8, 1916
James M. Ellers - obscene publication
(This was probably as result of the head injury and what resulted in his incarceration in Springfield) He was taken in a straight jacket, and according to his sister Mirth, his mother cried, "My boy! Oh my boy!"

His death certificate indicates that heart disease was the cause of death and contributing to everything was schizophrenia.
