FATAL ACCIDENT SUNDAY EVENING
Mrs. Mary Henrietta Clayton is killed instantly
Mrs. Mary Henrietta Clayton lost her life in an auto accident on the highway half a mile south of Madera last Sunday evening. She had been at Fish Camp for the day with her husband, C. J. Clayton, her brother, Paul Alley and Miss Betty Best, and they were on their way home.
Mr. Elley was driving to Selma. The truck, laden with grapes for the San Francisco market, was bound north. At a small bridge over a canal Elley is said to have attempted to drive between the truck and a buggy traveling on the side of the road. The rear end of the light car struck the truck and it swerved sharply to the side. Mrs. Clayton was thrown from the car by the force of the impact with the reavily laden truck. She struck the concrete pavement on her head and sustained a fractured skull. She was rushed to a Madera sanitarium, but died en route. The injuries sustained by Clayton and Miss Best were not serious.
Deceased was a native of Texas but had lived in California for two and a half years. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Elley of this place. Her husband is employed in Kutner's store.
An inquest was held in Medera Monday morning and in the afternoon Coroner Jay brought the body of Mrs. Clayton to Selma. Service were conducted by Reverend Truex at the Presbyterian church at 4 p. m. on Monday and interment took place at the I. O. O. F. cemetery.
