The family sharecropped to survive, migrating from southern Oklahoma to north-central Texas to West Texas and back again many times. J. W. went into the CCC Campfor a year or two before going into the Army when America entered WWII. He served in the Pacific Theater until 1945; the he was honorably discharged. He later said he learned three things in the Army; How to shoot a rifle, how to shoot dice and how to peel potatoes.

J. W. worked hard all his life, almost every day of his life. By the late 40s J. W. 's father opened a service station on Hickory St. in Dallas, Texas where J. W. worked on cars and trucks and pumped gas. Later he opened his own station on Good Latimer in Dallas that he closed in 1968. He worked building motors until he retired when he was 65 and on the weekends he would be a shade tree mechanic, working on cars to make a few extra dollars. Until just before his death he continued to work as a night watchman for Dallas Independent School District.

In 1948 J. W. married Emily Bell Dempsey. Emily had a son from a previous relationship and she and J. W. had 6 children in three years (2 sets of twins). Tragically four of those babies died; Sandra Kay, Ima Bernice, Sammy Ray and Jerry Wayne. On December 7, 1951 Emily died in a fatal automobile accident.

In 1953 J. W. married Estie Ilene Ross. She had 3 boys from previous relationships and marriages. She and J. W. legally adopted Emily's son plus the two surviving children from Emily's and J. W.'s union bringing the total starting number of childen to 6. Then J. W. and Ilene had 3 more children together. They raised all the kids as their own, making no differences due to parentage.

J. W. never lived in the best or biggest house on the block, However he took pride in his yard. He had the greenest and plushest St. Augustine grass. After working a full day at his job or most of the day in the garage at home, he relished spending time with Family and Friends, laughing and talking on an old wooden bench on his beautiful lawn.

J. W. was a simple man who worked hard but loved harder. After having children and grandchildren, no one can remember a picture of him without a baby or child in his arms or on his lap. He only had a third grade education but had wisdom for the ages: Work hard for what you get and Thank God for what you got.
