Walter Bjornson, of Menomonie, Wis., was at home under hospice care when he passed from this Earth on Tuesday, March 23, 2010, after a six-week struggle with cancer.
Edward Walter Bjornson was born September 23, 1923, to Edward and Minnie (Sobottka) Bjornson near Plum City, Wis.
Known as Walter, he grew up in and around Spring Valley, Wis. He graduated high school in 1941. He began to work in the family lumber business at a young age and continued there for most of his life.
He married Nancy Jacobson on October 23, 1943 at United Methodist Church in Glenwood City, Wis., just before leaving for basic training in the United States Army. He served with the Seventh Army 40th Engineers Battalion and was in the invasion of southern France in 1944 and active in the European Theater of Operations until the end of the war in 1945. He re-entered the family business after his discharge and spent several months training at the National Lumber Graders School in Memphis, Tenn. After the sale of the business, he and Nancy retired to Menomonie, where they lived for 30 years.
Walter was preceded in death by a son, Joel; parents, Edward and Minnie Bjornson; stepmother, Emma Bjornson; brothers-in-law, George Breitinger and Norris Larson.
He leaves to mourn, his wife, Nancy; children, Teresa (Claire) Stein of Baldwin, Wis., Wendy (David Gonzales) Bjornson of Portland, Ore., E. Jon (Joan Carruthers) Bjornson of Bushkill, Pa.; four grandchildren, Steven (Tammy) Gerber of White Bear Lake, Minn., Elena (Mike Foley) Gerber of Minneapolis, Minn., Sarah (David) Weiske of Baldwin, Corey (Sarah Lynn) Stein of Spring Valley; six great-grandchildren, Cailey, Alexander and Samuel Weiske, Aivery, Jackson and Isabella Stein; three sisters, Betty Breitinger of Racine, Wis., Mary Ann (Gerald) Peterson of Baldwin, Lois Larson of River Falls, Wis.; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, March 27, 2010, at 2:00 p.m. at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Menomonie, with Pastor Roy Harrisville III officiating.
There will be visitation Friday, March 26, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Olson Funeral Home in Menomonie and at the church one hour prior to the service on Saturday.
Burial will be at 5:00 p.m. in St. John's Cemetery in Spring Valley with military honors by Spring Valley American Legion Post 227.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, local food pantries or Our Savior's Lutheran Church.
