He was the son of Jesse J. & Mary (Murphy) Watkins. He married Alice Kelley.John Marr Watkins was the grandson of a Republic of Texas hero, Jesse Jernigan Watkins Sr. who was killed at the hands of the Indians, at the 3 Forks of the Trinity River in Dallas, Tx. Jesse had been sent by General Sam Houston to make a treaty with the Indians, so when Texas declared their intent to separate from Mexico, the indians would fight with the Texians.

John Marr Watkins was a hard working husband, who loved his family, and died too early to realize his dreams. He died of pneumonia at age 31. He was born in Lynn Flat Texas, and after marrying Mary Alice in 1885, he moved to Douglass, Texas where they made their homestead. He is buried in the Finley Cemetery, on Buckshot Road, Douglass, Texas.
