Father John was the son of John B Hutchins & Eleanor Brown. He went to a private school in Larue Co KY where he was a fellow pupil of Abraham Lincoln. He was afterwards sent to St Thomas Seminary & finally to St Joseph College. He was ordained at St Joseph Cathedral 1 Jul 1838 in Bardstown KY. He was the first priest to receive tonsure in the state of OH. In April, 1852, Rev. John Hutchins became pastor of St. Augustine Parish, Lebanon, Ky. and he remained until November, 1863. In February, 1862 the church was taken over for a military hospital, but it was soon removed following an appeal by the bishop to the military authorities.
