Funeral services were held Saturday, August 20 at First Reformed Church, Edgerton.
Interment was in Hillside Cemetery, Edgerton.
Martha Winkelhorst Kreun was born to John and Lena (Kallemeyn) Winkelhorst on Nov. 18, 1907 near Fertile. As a young girl, the family moved to a farm south of Edgerton where Martha attended first grade in a country school.
The family later moved into Edgerton where Martha finished her first year at Edgerton Public School. Because of her father's occupation, the family moved often, thus Martha attended many rural schools in Pipestone and Murray Counties.
After her graduation from Edgerton Public High School in 1924, she attended and graduated from Winona State University where she received her teaching certificate in 1926. She then began teaching in rural schools in the Edgerton area.
On June 16, 1938 she married Nelson Kreun near Leota. Following their marriage their first home was in Jasper. Five years later, the family rented a farm three miles east of Edgerton that they eventually bought and lived the next 35 years.
In 1953 she started teaching fourth grade at the Edgerton Public School where she finished her career in the fourth grade in 1973. She was recognized as Pipestone County's Teacher of the Year and was sent to the Twin Cities to receive her award.
In 1975, Nelson and Martha retired, sold the farm, and moved into Edgerton.
Nelson preceded her in death in December of 1990. Martha continued to reside in their home until Dec. 18, 1997 when she moved to the Edgebrook Apartments.
On July 8, 2002 she became a resident of Edgebrook Care Center.
She was a life-long member of the First Reformed Church, Edgerton where she was active with church circle.
She is survived by her two children, Keith Kreun, Fredericksburg, Iowa and Diane (Denny) Altman, Rock Rapids, Iowa; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Gloria Winkelhorst, Buena Park, Calif. and Tena Winkelhorst, Leota.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Nelson; three brothers, Nicholas, Gerrit and Martin Winkelhorst and two sisters, Johanna Peters and Jeanette Uilk.
