PLEASANT GARDEN, NC - Mr. Conrad R. "Connie" Key went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, September 25, 2009, after declining health and a courageous battle with cancer.
Funeral services were held at 2 pm on Monday, September 28, at Forbis & Dick Funeral Home in Pleasant Garden. Interment followed at McConnell Road Baptist Church Cemetery with full military honors and Masonic rites.
He was born in Surry County on May 29, 1925, to Ransom and Ida Lowe Key, and was a gratuate of McLeansville High School.
He was a veteran of World War II in the US Marine Corps stationed in the Panama Canal Zone for three years.
He was preceded in death by one son, Randy; his parents; brothers, Herman and Leonard, and sister, Veronia Hamby.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mozelle Berry Key (whom he married on December 21, 1946); one granddaughter, Mary Donna (his buddy), and her mother, Maria; brothers, Reuben (Reva) of Gibsonville, Kenneth, and John (Sally) of Greensboro; sister, Minnie Jackson (Norris) of Gibsonville; and loving nephews and nieces.
He moved to Greensboro at an early age and his first job was delivering parts by bicycle for Jones Automotive Company. He then sold parts for Motor Bearings and Parts Company in Greensboro. He also worked with his brothers at Key's Block Repair until 1969 when he left to become a sales representative for P. T. Brake Lining and Truck Parts, where he worked for 20 years.
In 1979 he was chosen as one of the top 20 salesmen in the US that year. He was also the owner of Key Marketing Company in Pleasant Garden until he retired because of his declining health.
Connie was a long time member of McConnell Road Baptist Church in Greensboro.
After moving to Pleasant Garden, he faithfully attended Providence Friends Meeting. He was very active in the Quaker Men's Fellowship as long as his health permitted.
He was a member of Corinthian Lodge 542, Scottish Rite, Shriners, Rose Chapter 178 OES, Liberty American Legion #81, DAV, Forever 50 years, and the T-Model Club.
