1927 was the greatest time in aviation history. Pilots were flying across the nation and across the Altantic from NY to Paris for the first time. Daring young men raced each other in "National Tours". Thousands of spectators gathered to watch. Major John Perry Wood was one of these flyers.
He was lost in one such race as his plane crashed in Needles, California. He is buried in Pine Hill Cemetery, Louisa, Kentucky next to his brother and mother. He never married.
