Funeral services for W.A. Lewis Sr., 68, a retired telegraph operator for the Southern Railway System, who died at 12:30 p.m. yesterday at his home, 927 Haywood Rd., following a long illness, will be conducted at 11 a.m. tomorrow in Abernethy Methodist Church. The Rev. E.H. Nease Jr. and the Rev. T.A. Groce will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hills Cemetery. Masonic Rites will be conducted at the grave by member of West Asheville Lodge No. 665, A. F. & A. M. Pallbearers will be Robert Lunsford, Troy Lunsford, Milton Currence, W.H. Cogburn Jr., Louis Fox and Robert Yarborough. Honorary Pallbearers will include French Broad Lodge No. 292, A. F. & A. M., members of the Shrine and Scottish Rite, and members of the Brotherhood of Railway Telegraphers. Lewis was a member of Abernethy Methodist Church, French Broad Masonic Lodge, a Shriner, and a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies.
He retired about ten years ago, after 37 years of service with the railway in Buncombe and Madison Counties. Surviving are the widow; three daughters, Mrs. Katy Lou Bridges, Mrs. Catherine Burnette, and Miss Melba Lewis of Asheville; two sons, Jerome of Knoxville, Tenn., and W.A. Lewis Jr. of Asheville; two sisters, Mrs. J.D. Nunnelley of Alcoa, Tenn., Mrs. Emma Hunt of Chattanooga, Tenn.; two brothers, Ed Lewis of Alcoa and David Lewis of Miami, Fla., and two grandchildren.
