He celebrated his 104 birthday January 28, 1991. He had the distinction of living through 20 presidents in his lifetime and his country had been involved in five major wars and numerous small ones. He saw the invention of the automobile, airplane and the space shuttle. He was a retired farmer and former member of the Armistead Chapel CME Church, which was named after his father. He was a member of the Oak Grove AME Church, where he served as a member of the trustee and steward boards, secretary of the church, superintendent of the Sunday school and church historian.
Survivors include brothers, Shellie Armistead, Woodson David Armistead, William Owen Armistead, all of North Chicago, Ill.; sister, Ms. Laurene Armistead, Florence.
