Robert was the son of Leidy Yost and Kathryn Mayer. His mother remarried after his father's death. He graduated from Girard College for Boys in January 1943 after studying the trade of electrician. He was First Sergeant in the school battalion. Two months after graduation he enlisted in the United States Army and shipped out to Fort Meade in Maryland. By late 1943 he was stationed in England. In 1944 he was serving as an advance scout. He was killed in action in Germany.

This is from his school yearbook, "Hick's knowledge of electricity may someday approach that of Mr. Edison's. His willingness to learn and his friendly attitude should carry him to the top. We're with you Hick, in mind and spirit, and we will look forward to the time when you have realized your ambition to become an engineer."
