On June 16 he was flying a Vultee BT-13A tail number 42-42926 out of Oscode AAF on a weather observation flight with weatherman Luther Blakeney as passenger. A rapidly forming fog extended to the lake surface and he became disoriented, possibly loosing the artificial horizon as well, and crashed into the lake. Both were recovered. He left behind a wife LaVerne.
