Col. N. D. Ely, 75, Former Davenport Attorney Is Dead. Death Occurs in Washington, D. C, After a Lingering Illness
Col. Nathan D. Ely, 75, former well known Davenport attorney, died Wednesday in Washington, D. C, following a lingering illness, according to word received by friends here today. Funeral services followed by cremation, with burial later in Arlington cemetery, were expected to be held today.
Born in Fond du Lac, Wis., Dec. 18, 1865, he came to Davenport upon graduation from the college of law at the State University of Iowa and with Attorney A, G. Bush launched the law firm of Ely & Bush, in 1895. The partnership continued until after the first World war, when Mr Ely entered the judge advocate department of the United States army, serving for a time in the Philippines, in Presidio, Calif., and in Washington. He retired a number of years ago with the rank of colonel, and since that time made his home in Washington.
On War Draft Board During the World war he served on the local draft board, entering the judge advocate service at the conclusion of the board's duties. The firm of Ely & Bush maintained offices in the Old Masonic temple for many years. He served in the navy during the Spanish war, and later organized two batteries and supply companies in Davenport. which are now part of the 126th field artillery. He had charge of building the armory for these batteries, of which he is called the father.
A son, Eugene B. Ely, one of the early aviators, was killed a number of years ago when his plane crashed. They had one daughter, Madie E.
