On February 18, 1865, Thomas Armitage of Co. C, 26th Michigan died at the Belle Island Confederate Prison west of Richmond, Virginia. He had enlisted at the age of 26 on November 3, 1862, at Ann Arbor and was MIA at Ream's Station. (He was likely reinterred into the Richmond National Cemetery.)

26th Michigan service included: Camp Jackson, Alexandria, Washington, Suffolk, the New York Draft Riots, Mine Run, Wilderness, Po River, Spotsylvania, North Anna, Totopotomoy, Cold Harbor, Petersburg including Deep Bottom, & Ream's Station
